Q: Can we streamline administering medications during the pandemic?
A: There are a number of resources to help you make those decisions. American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) has produced a Field Guide to Reduce Medication Burden During COVID-19, ASCP and COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) Medication Management FAQ, ASCP as well as other ASCP COVID-19 resources.
University of Maryland School of Pharmacy also produced Optimizing Medication Management during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Implementation Guide for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care, which the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) has adapted.
To quote RIDOH, “Clinical decisions, such as streamlining prescribing, are at the discretion of the attending physician and should be done in collaboration with the patient and their family, as appropriate, while also balancing appropriate patient benefits and risks.”
Information is changing rapidly as the COVID-19 outbreak evolves.
